Welcome!
To Bryarose of the Wyllows!
Handmade Primitives, Patterns, Antiques and Vintage Items.
So many people have asked me what a Primitive is that I thought I'd briefly explain it here.
A Primitive is a piece of your history dating back to the American Industrial Revolution and thereafter.
During this time when money and needfuls were limited, Mothers and Grandmothers would use supplies at hand to make a doll or toy for a child. An example of a needful of that time might be old discarded clothes, quilts, loose buttons left over lace from a dress. These needfuls were worked into crude, basic works of love and Stitched by the light of the fire or an oil lamp in the evening as a way to unwind. These early Primitives became the 'lovies' of children of that day.
Today, we self representing artists try to replicate these dolls. Hopping into the car and driving down to the local Walmart isn't always the answer. We have to age, antique, rust, yellow, patina, grunge, and wear new fabric without tearing or destroying it (although ripped seams are a plus in primitives.) Its' a tricky art and we each have our secret or favorite recipe for these ageing processes. We also keep a sharp eye out for vintage materials, buttons and other various items to finish our prims with.
The use of felled sticks for appendages is popular. Stuffing for dolls might be cut up rags, clean dried grass clippings or sawdust as well as herbs and good ol'polyfil.
Stiffeners may be a mixture of flour and water.
As you can see, making Primitives is a timely process and can take days or weeks.
So, why do we love Primitive art?
I think it turns our hearts towards home and back to a simpler time. it may remind you of a loving Grandmother or Great Grandmother. It may spark a memory of love and comfort.
So, what is a Primitive?
Maybe something as simple as
Love
I hope this helps answer some of your questions.
Sit back, relax with your favorite cuppa and look around. Come back soon and often.
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Many Prim Hugs,
Erin
